Commentary
I updated this code doodle as a fun way to practice JavaScript and data visualization. Also because the original graphic ended with the 2009 - 2010 yeer during the midst of the US Great Financial Crisis, and I wanted to see how the market has performed since then.
Also, for comparisons' sake I included a flip between the index returns and with gold returns. I think that "makes the case" for why gold is often considered a "safe haven" asset during times of economic uncertainty, as it has historically maintained a nearly perfect inversion correlation in performance vs US Equities as an asset class.
When backtesting over the past 25 years, some mix of gold and equities would have significantly reduced both total drawdown & portfolio beta while still maintaining a very respectable total return. Backtest Portfolio example on Testfolio with 60/40 split.
